$5 Interest in the Census
The census records of England are among the most important and informative
records available to the researcher of English family history. A census record
will provide details such as: age, place of birth, occupation, and relationship
within the family group, and is one of the few English records which gives
information about those elusive brothers and sisters. Australian researchers
usually gain access to the records by hiring a microfilmed copy of a particular
district through their nearest LDS Family History Centre, or by paying for
the services of a professional researcher.
But, all this is about to change...
The censuses of England are currently being produced as scanned images
and released for sale on cd-rom. The GSQ Management Committee is planning
to purchase the 1861 and possibly the 1841 censuses for each English county.
But, we will only be able to do this with the financial assistance of the
Society's members.
Each census year for each county will cost between 35 and 50 pounds, which
adds up to a lot of pounds, and even more dollars, when converted. This is
why the Committee is asking the members for donations towards the purchase
of these very important records.
