WELCOME TO THE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY OF QUEENSLAND
INC IN BRISBANE

If you wish to research your family history and don’t know where to start, or you are an experienced genealogist looking for ways around the inevitable blocks, then the Genealogical Society of Queensland Inc. welcomes you. The Society is headquartered in East Brisbane and is for all family history enthusiasts, no matter their experience or areas of interest.

GSQ was formed in 1978 as a non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit organisation. Its aim is to foster genealogical and family history research throughout the State of Queensland. The Society’s main Library is located at 38 Fisher Street, East Brisbane, which is close to the Brisbane CBD and there are branches at Bayside, Beaudesert, Brisbane Southern Suburbs, North Brisbane and Redlands. In addition to our Branches, we have a number of active Interest Groups who can provide specialist advice for those with research interests in Scandinavia, Scotland, England, Ireland and Germany. The Computer Interest Group can help you with computing matters and the Convict Connections Group has the most extensive knowledge of our convict ancestors.

The Society has the largest family history reference library in Queensland and dedicated volunteers to help members research their ancestry.

The Society has:

  • Research Officers to assist country and interstate members with brief searches of the Society’s records;
  • A Research Officer available to undertake research at the Queensland State Archives and State Library for a fee;
  • A Research Officer, resident in Sydney, available to undertake research for members at the Archives Office of New South Wales at a discount rate.
The Society is affiliated with the following organisations:
The Society also has reciprocal arrangements with the majority of the leading family history/genealogy societies in Australia.

More details about our resources and services are available by clicking on the relevant links on our site. To fully appreciate the extent of our resources, however, you really need to visit our Library. Give us a call during Library Opening Hours and see how we can help you.

Beginners and advanced genealogy/family history classes are held regularly throughout the year. See our news/events page for the next round of courses.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Genealogical Society of Queensland.
