Researching Scandinavian Ancestors

February 8 @ 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM

$25 – $40

Researching Scandinavian Ancestors

Do you have family who came from Northern European countries? Researching any of your European ancestors can be challenging if you do not speak the language but perhaps even more so in the Scandinavian/Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland.  Come along to this presentation to discover how to research your Scandinavian ancestors where there is only a small number of given names and surnames. This presentation will provide guidance for focusing on your ancestor and eliminating other possible family lines as well as a discussion on the major events which affected families and the major records used in online research. Recent record digitization for Denmark, Norway and Sweden puts images of the church records at your fingertips..

Presenter: Steinar Johansen
Born in Norway, Steinar started genealogical research at the age of 9 when he discovered an ancestral chart at a bookshop in Norway.
Steinar has lived in Australia since 1970, joined GSQ in 1981 and has been the convenor of the Scandinavian Special Interest Group since 1982.
