SUMMARY:Wednesday night @ GSQ: Thomas ** Prior - What's in a name?
DESCRIPTION:Three generations of Murray Priors were active in Queensland commerce and politics in the nineteenth century\, their individual identity often mistakenly attributed in contemporary reporting (and subsequently). A not uncommon occurrence from the period when sons were named after their father\, an ongoing challenge for researchers. This presentation will be based on a project that started life as a simple enquiry\, Who were the original purchasers of land in what is now St Lucia?.  \nFor members only with a gold coin contribution. \n\nPresenter: Andrew Darbyshire\, Brisbane History Group\nAndrew Darbyshire’s professional background was in the planning and delivery of capital works projects\, mainly hospital and research facilities. His interest in history was reawakened after a 30+ year spell when he moved to Brisbane. Andrew is Co-ordinator of the St Lucia History Group\, past Council Member of the RHSQ and current Treasurer of the BHG. His particular research interests are the western suburbs of Brisbane and wherever that leads him. \nImage: SLQ \n

SUMMARY:Monday Morning Natters
DESCRIPTION:Morning Morning Natters provides you with an opportunity to chat with like-minded people in a casual environment and share information.  Each month usually has a theme with a variety of topics covered. The theme for 2019 will be the GSQ Special Interest Groups as each month will feature a speaker from one of the groups to talk about their activities and benefit to members – all run by volunteers. \nMarch topic: Legacy Family Tree SIG \nKnowing which family tree program to use can be a dilemma.  One of the most popular is Legacy Family Tree so take the opportunity to share a cuppa with Judy Lofthouse and learn about the Legacy Family Tree User Group. A gold coin contribution for morning tea is appreciated. \n

SUMMARY:Irish ancestry? Jump in now!
DESCRIPTION:There’s an air of mystery surrounding Irish research\, but why not ‘Jump in Now’? \nIn this presentation\, Bobbie Edes will demonstrate the various online records now available as well as different ways to get around some of the issues of missing records.   \nJoin Bobbie as she explains why you should Jump In Now and tackle that ‘too hard’ family line. Following the talk\, there will be a hands-on session so numbers are strictly limited and pre-booking online is a must. Members are welcome to bring along their own laptops so they can bookmark some of the sites mentioned. \n\nPresenter: Bobbie Edes \nStarting her research in the mid 1990s\, Bobbie was initially told to forget about Ireland as it was all destroyed in the Dublin bombings. Instead she traced and visited elderly members of her extended family\, borrowed and copied many photographs and visited local cemeteries and archives. Within a few years of beginning her genealogy addiction\, Bobbie tackled some overseas archives to extend her research. \nSince that point Bobbie has made numerous trips to the UK and researched in many Records Offices throughout England and Ireland. She normally makes a point of spending two full weeks in each of them and has a never ending ‘to do’ list ready for that next overseas journey. \nJoin Bobbie as she shares her extensive and broad knowledge of how to go about genealogy in the correct manner\, learning about new avenues for internet searching along the way. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar Wednesday: Creating your own family history map
DESCRIPTION:Why should you consider using maps\, and creating your own\, in your family history research? \nBy placing where they lived onto a map\, you can identify migration patterns\, perhaps view the land they owned in the context of others in the area and gain a better understanding of your ancestor in place and time. For example\, have you ever wondered how close your ancestors lived to one another? Where exactly was your great-grandmother born? Seeing significant events from your family’s past on a map allows you to gain a clearer picture of your family’s journey. \n\nPresenter: Sharyn Merkley \nSharyn first became interested her own family history as a teenager listening to her great grandmother’s stories. Between work as a computer programmer\, raising children and a later career in teaching\, she has continued to research her own and her husband’s families. \nWhile hunting the Merkley ancestors in early Brisbane\, she became fascinated by the story of the Great Fire of Brisbane. Determined to bring to light the stories of both ordinary and well-known personalities whose lives were touched by the fires\, she used her family history detective skills to rebuild their lives. Family stories are incomplete unless they are in context so social history has become a new passion. Brisbane Burns: How the great fires of 1864 shaped a city and its people was published in 2017. \nHaving also recently completed the Diploma in Family History with the University of Tasmania\, Sharyn is keen to share what she has learned through the Genealogical Society of Queensland’s Education program. \n

SUMMARY:Military group
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the Military Special Interest Group is to assist members with their research into their military ancestry through discussion\, guest speakers and acquisition of resources. The Resource Centre is open for research from 12 noon to 4:00 pm after the meeting. Guest speakers may be invited to the meetings from time to time. The meetings are informal as our members prefer to have general discussions in a friendly and open format. This gives us the opportunity to share knowledge and glean information from helpful hints provided by other members. Suggestions regarding workshops and guest speakers are always welcome! The group can help beginners and more experienced researchers overcome any problems they face locating information on their military relatives. \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday night @ GSQ: Brisbane at war- military locations & using DNA
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn will show us details\, including locations and numerous photos of many forgotten military camps in the Brisbane area. You will be amazed by the connections that a number of famous people had with these locations in Brisbane during WWII. He will also discuss the many children left behind by US soldiers and successful use of a DNA test to find a child of an American soldier. \nFor members only with a gold coin contribution. \n\nPresenter: Peter Dunn \nPeter is the Webmaster and owner of the popular “Australia @ War” web site www.ozatwar.com which contains everything you would want to know about military activities in Australia during WWII.
