LIST 13 - DEUXIEME DIZAINE - BIRTHS FROM BURIALS
In checking the various burial registers for the deaths of the "Deuxieme
Dizaine", 126 names were left with no corresponding baptism and consequently
no known parents.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of burial
church of burial
age at burial
Christian name
family name
year of birth
The list is ordered alphabetically by surname.
These Births from Burials account for 3% of the "Deuxieme Dizaine".
Nearly all the records came from either St Phillips Sydney or St Johns Parramatta
but there were a smattering from other churches as the table below shows.
Table 13.1. - Source Churches
Church No.
-----------------------------
St Phillips Sydney 93
St Johns Parramatta 23
St Davids Hobart 6
St Matthews Windsor 4
St Lukes Liverpool 1
St Marys Sydney 1
St Peters Richmond 1
Christ Church Castlereagh 1
The numbers were almost evenly divided between males and females (62 & 64
respectively). The Christian name of the child Perkins unfortunately was not
recorded.
Regrettably St Phillips did not start to record the 'age at death' of
their burials until 1805 and then only sporadically until September 1809
with the arrival of the Reverend Willaim Cowper when it was routinely recorded.
Similarly St Johns only occasionally recorded the 'age at death' from 1806.
As a consequence over half (63) the entries are unhelpfully described as
'infant' or 'child'. William Lyons & John Rowe were described as a 'boy'. In
all these cases the year of birth has been assumed to be the year of death.
For the remainder the ages ranged from 2 months for Mary Smith to 25 years for
Mary Brown.
Thankfully all other church registers did record the 'age at death' making
birth a little easier to determine.
Where the surname as a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname after
the slash is an alternative spelling interpretation of how the name was spelt
on the original document.
Elizabeth Alderton's parents are believed to be Lawrence and Sarah but
their arrival status is otherwise unknown. Elizabeth Dinsdale's mother, also
named Elizabeth, would appear to have tragically died in childbirth two months
before her own demise. Ann Wilson was the daughter of a member of the 73rd
Regiment only newly arrived in the colony but otherwise unknown.
The Reverend Knopwood in Hobart conveniently did record the names of the parents
of deceased children. Thus we know the parents of; Elizabeth Edwards (William
& Sarah nee Bradford), Mary Ann Fox (Robert & Catherine McCarthy), Thomas Thomas
(Thomas & Elizabeth nee - ) but not their arrival status.
Mary Brown was twenty five years old when she was buried at St Marys Sydney
in 1829 and it cannot be said with certainty that she was colonial born.
