LIST 19 - TROISIEME DIZAINE - BIRTHS FROM BURIALS
In checking the various burial registers for the deaths of the "Troisieme
Dizaine", 171 names were left with no corresponding baptism and consequently
no known parents, 91 boys and 80 girls.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of burial
church of burial
age at burial
Christian name
family name
year of birth
The list is ordered alphabetically by surname.
These Births from Burials account for 3% of the "Troisieme Dizaine".
The vast majority of the records came from either St Phillips Sydney or
St Johns Parramatta but there were a smattering from other churches as the
table below shows.
Table 19.1. - Source Churches
Church No.
-----------------------------
St Phillips Sydney 83
St Johns Parramatta 50
St Davids Hobart 12
St Lukes Liverpool 8
St James Sydney 5
St Matthews Windsor 4
St Peters Richmond 3
Christ Church Castlereagh 3
St Marys Sydney 2
St Thomas Sackville Reach 1
The Christian names of the two children Jones & Raynor unfortunately
were not recorded. Likewise the child Wood had no Christian name recorded but
was noted as being a girl.
In eight instances the age at death was not recorded, only the nondescript
'infant'. All eight were from St Johns Parramatta. In all these cases the year
of birth has been assumed to be the year of death. For the remainder the ages
ranged from 1 day for John Green to 19 years for Edward Hogan. For the older
children it cannot be said with certainty that they were colonial born.
Where the surname as a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname after
the slash is an alternative spelling interpretation of how the name was spelt
on the original document.
