LIST 24 - TROISIEME DIZAINE - DEPARTURES

In  determining the fate of the "Troisieme Dizaine" , apart  from death, the
other terminating event for many of them, at least  in terms of their colonial
experience, was their departure from  the colony. This list presents the known
departures of the "Troisieme Dizaine"  and the ship upon which they sailed. It
is by no  means complete and undoubtedly many who left have been overlooked.
But for what it is worth 282 (or about 4%) are known to have left the colony,
most never to return.

The information on each departure includes:

               date and ship
               age at time of departure
               birth date
               Christian name
               father's family name
               father's Christian name
               mother's family name
               mother's Christian name
parents' civil status at the time of the child's birth
parents' marital status at the time of the child's birth
year and ship of arrival - where applicable
year and place of death - if known & abroad.

The list is ordered firstly by date of departure and secondly  on the child's
father's name. Family groups are listed according  to age.

One  of the earliest myths of Australian History is the  idea  of "for  the term
of his natural life". A surprisingly large  number of  convicts  returned  to
England at  the  completion  of  their sentences  as  well  as many others
associated  with  the  early history of the colony. The "Troisieme Dizaine" were
no  exception in this regard.

It is interesting to contemplate that there must be many hundreds of  descendants
in England who have no idea that  one  of  their ancestors  had their formative
experiences in the English  colony of  New  South Wales. One of the hopes of
this book is  that  any such connections might one day be brought to light.

The military, as might be expected, were the main group to return to  England
but compared to Volume 1 the proportion is much  less reflecting  the lower
proportion of the military to  the  general population  as  the numbers in the
colony slowly  increased.  The three  most  significant departures were; firstly
when  the  73rd Regiment was relieved by the 46th Regiment in 1814 - 36  children
departed,  secondly  when the 46th Regiment was relieved  by  the 48th  Regiment
in 1818 - 36 children departed; thirdly  when  the 48th  Regiment  was relieved
by the 23rd Regiment in 1824   -  62 children departed.

This list presents the minimum numbers of the "Troisieme Dizaine" who are known
to have left the colony.

The  profile of these departing "Troisieme Dizaine"  showed  some distinctive
characteristics. Firstly since the majority of  those departing  were  the
children of the  military,  236  (92%)  had fathers  who had come free to the
colony. Secondly 249 (93%)  had parents who were married.

Regrettably  the  date  and ship of departure is  unknown  in  62instances.  The
evidence for the person leaving  the  colony  is because  either their marriage
or death is recorded overseas  but no information has been forthcoming on their
ship of departure.

Of the 282 "Troisieme Dizaine" who left the infant colony 34  are known  to have
made a return voyage and they are identified  with an  asterix (*) and listed
below along with return date and  ship where known.

after leaving the colony with this military  officer father  in 1813 for Ceylon.
William Macquarie Molle  returned  to the colony some time before his marriage
in 1836 but is known  to have  left the colony a second time because his  second
marriage was in India. Robert Edward Lord left the colony in 1820 only  to return
in 1829 but also left the colony again sometime before his marriage  in England
in 1842. John Lang left the colony for  good in 1842 aboard 'Nabob' for Calcutta
in India. John Watsford  made several  trips to the islands as a missionary in
1851  and  1881. John Youl made another trip to London in 1861.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the name
would be made on List 1 from which the date and  name of  the ship of departure
would be retrieved, secondly using  the appropriate  date and vessel, the
departure would be  located  on this list and finally an alphabetical search
on the name would be made on the ship of departure.
