LIST 2 - BIRTHS - TROISIEME DIZAINE - MOTHERS NAME ORDER
This second reference list, titled "Births of the 'Troisieme Dizaine' -
Mothers' Name Order" lists births for children born in the colony from 1811 until
1820 as well as childhood arrivals for the same period of time.
For a full description of the information presented for each child refer
to List 1, although in this list the mother's name and details have been placed
ahead of the father's.
The list is ordered firstly on the name of the mother, meaning both family
name and Christian name, as distinct from just the surname, then secondly
on the date of birth of the child. This has the effect of collecting the entries
into family groups in birth order, mini family trees as it were. This
list is particularly useful for women who bore children to more than one man
in that it groups all of her children together, something that does not happen
in most other lists of this work where the children are invariably listed under
their father's surname.
The Christian names of 1,055 of the mothers of the "Troisieme Dizaine" are
unknown. In a further three only the initial is known. The maiden names
of 2,292 (33%) of the mothers are unknown, this relatively large figure
includes the 793 married women who arrived in the colony using their husbands'
surnames.
This being an English colony, there are no surnames beginning with the letters
'X' nor 'Z'.
The mother's marital status indicates whether, at the time of the child's birth,
she was either married 'm' or defacto 'd'. It turns out that only about
a quartre of the "Troisieme Dizaine" were illegitimate. The status is
unknown in 992 cases unfortunately.
Table 2.1. - Marital Status of Mother
Status Number Percentage
-----------------------------
Married 4,070 59.1%
Defacto 1,823 26.5%
unknown 992 14.4%
The mother's civil status at the time of the child's birth indicates whether
she was either:
CF - came free
GS - government servant (convict)
FS - free by servitude
AP - free by absolute pardon
NE - never emigrated
BC - born in the colony
NC - native of colony
-- - unknown
As can bee seen from the table below, by the third decade only a third of the
mothers had arrived in the colony as convicts. Notice how the numbers
of native born have dramatically increased. The arrival status of 1,698
of the mothers is unknown (mainly because the mother is unknown).
In the early years of the colony there were very few free women in the colony,
those that did arrival were almost all 'wives' of the military.
Table 2.2. - Civil Status of Mother
Status Number Percentage
------------------------------
CF 1740 25.3%
GS 1396 20.3%
FS 862 12.5%
AP 12 0.2%
NE 10 0.2%
BC 1162 16.9%
NC 5 0.1%
-- 1698 24.7%
This list contains 4,593 names. It does NOT contain the births of 2,292 children
whose mothers' surnames are unknown. These can be found in the Father List.
