LIST 15 - BAPTISMS - TROISIEME DIZAINE - OTHER CHURCHES
This 'primary source' list contains the details of baptisms for children who
were baptized later in life which took them outside the general ambit of the
records consulted for the basis of this book, 1811 to 1820, recorded in churches
other than the eleven already listed. There were 84 in total, 48 males and
36 females.
The information recorded for each child includes:
reference number
date of baptism
date of birth
Christian name
father's Christian name
father's family name
father's year of arrival in the colony
father's ship of arrival in the colony
father's status upon arrival in the colony
mother's Christian name
mother's maiden name
mother's year of arrival in the colony
mother's ship of arrival in the colony
mother's status upon arrival in the colony
parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth
parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth
parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable
The list is presented firstly by denomination; Anglican,
Catholic,Presbyterian, Wesleyan then Baptist, secondly by the date of
founding of each church, next in chronological order by date of baptism, finally
in chronological order by date of birth.
These Other Church baptisms account for 1% of the "Troisieme Dizaine".
Where the father's surname has a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname
after the slash is how the name was spelt in the original document or if second
name is substantially different it refers to an alias. Where the mother's surname
has a second name separated by a slash, the surname after the slash is her
married name at the time of the recording being made if she was married more
than once.
The reference number would direct the reader to the entry in the original source
document.
In the decade following 1820 there was a veritable blossoming of churches in
the colony;
Holy Trinity Kelso(1826)
St Annes Kissing Point(1827)
St James Pitt Town(1825)
St Johns Wilberforce(1826)
St James Sydney(1824)
St Pauls Cobbitty(1827)
St Peters Campbelltown(1821)
St Thomas Port Macquarie(1824)
St Thomas Sackville Reach(1821)
all of the Anglican communion.
The first Presbyterian kirk was also founded(1824) plus the first Wesleyan
chapels appeared.
There are ten duplicate entries on this list; three Anglican, five Catholic
and two Wesleyan. Thus the total individual entries is reduced to 74 with 39
males and 35 females.
It should be noted that this list contains considerably more information
than will be found in the original church register, being the result of decades
of research, principally associated with the Pioneer Register Project.
By definition all of these baptisms were "late" in the sense of being conducted
well after infancy, perhaps with the exception of those in 1821 and not all can
with certainty claim to be members of the "Troisieme Dizaine". The last to
be baptized in 1856 was Henry Dowling at the age of forty six at Launceston
in Van Diemens Land (which incidentally is the only Baptist entry). Henry
was born in London but his ship of arrival is unknown.
Apart from these baptisms there may well have been others which hopefully may
come to light under the stimulus of the interest created by this treatise.
There were ten percent more boys baptised than girls. Exactly half had convict
or former convict fathers and a quarter had convict or former convict mothers.
There were five colonial born fathers and nineteen colonial born mothers.
More than three quarters were illegitimate births. Unfortunately the civil
status of 20% of the fathers and 21% of the mothers in unknown at this time.
