LIST 18 - BAPTISMS - TROISIEME DIZAINE - THE PIONEER REGISTER
This fifteenth 'primary source' list contains the births of 1,191 children of
the "Troisieme Dizaine" which have been obtained from research done to compile
the Pioneer Register, 601 males and 590females.The information recorded for each child includes:
date of birth Christian name father's Christian name father's family name father's year of arrival in the colony father's ship of arrival in the colony father's status upon arrival in the colony mother's Christian name mother's maiden name mother's year of arrival in the colony mother's ship of arrival in the colony mother's status upon arrival in the colony parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable The list is arranged in date of birth order. The exact date of birth of most
of the entries is unknown so within each year the entries are arranged alphabetically on the father's surname.
These Pioneer Register births account for 17% of the "Troisieme Dizaine" .
In 134 (11%) cases the exact date of birth is recorded. The question needs
to be asked for those entries, where did the descendants who supplied the
information obtain that exact date ? In a further 51 cases the month of birth is known. On the other hand unfortunately not even the year of birth is known in 44 (4%) cases.
Where the father's surname has a second name separated by a slash '/', the surname
after the slash is how the name was spelt in the original document or if the
second name is substantially different it refers to an alias. Where the
mother's surname has a second name separated by a slash, the surname after the
slash is her married name at the time of the recording being made if she was
married more than once.
In 18 cases the father is unknown and in 33 cases the mother is unknown. In
another five cases both the father and the mother are unknown, these people
were generally married into Pioneer families and the names are to be found in the 'Son & Daughter-in-Law Index' of the Pioneer Register.
Elizabeth, Jane & Richard Brown had a colonial born mother who has not been
identified at this time. Similarly Robert Bruce, Ann & Louisa Watts and Mary
Woodward.
Dalrymple Briggs had an aboriginal mother.
John Gregory and William Smith had sons who were unnamed, William Hodges and John Smith had daughters who were unnamed. John Bent has two unnamed children. In several cases, a name for the father or mother may be known but not the
details of that person's arrival in the colony. The parent may have been using
an alias or the name may have been transcribed incorrectly, in either case
their true identity awaits clarification.
On this occasion there were slightly more boys baptized than girls. Almost
three out of four children had a convict or former convict father, the remainder
being mainly soldiers. Just over half of the mothers were convicts or former
convicts. Half the births were illegitimate which may explain why the children
do not
appear to have been baptized.
The big change for the "Troisieme Dizaine" was the increasing proportion
of colonial born parents; 17% of mothers and 3% of fathers (by 1820 the
percentages were 25% & 7% respectively). Sadly the civil status of 8% of parents
is unknown at this time.

Entries on this list have the reference identifier "PR-n" on List 1. To locate
an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name would be
made on List 1 from which the date of birth would be retrieved, secondly using the appropriate date, the birth would be located on this list and finally
an alphabetical search on the name would be made on the birth date if there
should be more than one entry for that date which would certainly be the case if only the birth year was known.
To locate the family tree in the Pioneer Register, the number "n" in the reference identifier "PR-n" refers to the Second Edition volume. Entries are alphabetical by Pioneer's name in each book.
