LIST 17 - BIRTHS - TROISIEME DIZAINE - VAN DIEMENS LAND
This is a list of children presumably born in Van Diemens Land but who were
not baptized at either St David's Hobart or St John's Launceston. There
are 479 members of the "Troisieme Dizaine" on the list, 264 boys and 215 girls.
The information recorded for each child includes:
year of birth
Christian name
family name
location
reference identifier
The list is presented; firstly in chronological order by year of birth, secondly
in alphabetical order upon father's family name.
Regretfully only the year of birth is known. The place of residence refers
to the location of the child at the time of the census or muster, not the place
of birth.
These births account for 7% of the "Troisieme Dizaine".

The entries come from several sources: CSO 1/122 which is from a census of
children conducted in Hobart in 1827; MM1 which is from a series of musters
of children conducted for Port Dalrymple in 1819, 1820 and 1821; SWD which
is from a register of orphan school admissions; VDLH3 which is from "Van
Diemens Land Heritage" a biographical and genealogical index edited by Neil
Chick composed of entries from private family sources.
Then there were entries from miscellaneous Anglican(CoE), Catholic(CoR),
and Presbyterian(CoS) church registers.
The Hobart Town Gazette of the 2nd January 1819 records the birth of male
triplets at Herdsmans Cove but unfortunately no further identifying details
have been found on them to date.

It is possible that some of these children may have been born overseas and
arrived after 1820 but there is no way of telling at the time of writing.
Entries on this list have the reference identifier "VDL" on List 1.
