BURIALS - EBENEZER KIRK PORTLAND HEAD

There  were 45 burials performed at Ebenezer during this  decade, but  with
no burials recorded for 1840 and only one for 1832  and 1839.  Unfortunately
to date the parish register  has  not  been completely transcribed.

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               burial date
               death date
               Christian name
               family name
               age
               abode
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               quality or profession
               reference number

The burials are listed in chronological order.

Not having completely transcribed the burial register means  that it  has
not  been possible to record  the  Officiating  Minister for  most  of the
entries although it can be said the  Rev. John Asland  performed three
burials in 1837 and Rev.J Fuller one  the same year and that the Reverend
John Cleland was the chaplain  in 1839 before his death in the parish and
his burial was  performed by Rev.John McGarvie. On several occasions there
was no chaplain present and the service was read by parishioners.

At the beginning of this decade the information to be recorded  on the
official  government  supplied forms for  each  burial  was; reference number,
date of burial, Christian name of the deceased, family name of the deceased,
age, abode, ship of arrival, quality or  profession  and officiating
minister.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded
in the 'Ship of Arrival' column.

Apart  from those few entries that have been transcribed, all  in data  in
this list, apart from the year of death and the  age  at death, is the result
of personal research, in particular the  year  and ship  of arrival have
been heavily researched outside the  parish register.

The  ages of the deceased range from two months for  John  Andrew Johnston
to  96  year  for  John  Kelly  although  this  age  is undoubtedly exaggerated.
One quarter of the deaths (eleven in  all) relate to infants who did not
live past their fifth birthday.

The identity of the deceased at this parish has been discovered in 36 (or 80% of)
cases during this decade.

There  were  three duplicate entries in this  parish's  register; Jane
Duff, George Richmond & David Thompson - all duplicated  in St Matthews
Windsor register.

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry
in the original source document. The reference numbers  for Ebenezer Kirk
continued from the previous decade and run  sequentially from 0007 to 0050
by the end of the decade.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the
name would be made on List 5 using code "EKPH" from  which the  date  of
burial  would be  retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate date, the
burial would then be located on this list.
