LIST 1 - BIRTHS - FATHERS NAME ORDER
This list records 26,072 births and/or baptisms for the decade 1831 to 1840 in
the colony of New South Wales.
The information recorded for each child includes:
date of baptism date of birth church of baptism or source of information Christian name father's Christian name father's family name father's year of arrival in the colony father's ship of arrival in the colony father's status upon arrival in the colony mother's Christian name mother's maiden name mother's year of arrival in the colony mother's ship of arrival in the colony mother's status upon arrival in the colony parent's civil status at the time of the child's birth parent's marital status at the time of the child's birth parent's year & country/church of marriage where applicable reference numberRegrettably 15,212 baptismal records have yet to be transcribed meaning that
the identification of parents and other details about the birth are lacking.
These records only have the minimal information recorded of: year of baptism year of birth church of baptism Christian name father's Christian name father's family name mother's Christian name mother's maiden name (rarely) reference numberThe reference number for those records which have been transcribed
is the sequence number from the baptismal register. For those records which have not been transcribed it is the State Archives database reference number
which consists of a volume number followed by a sequence number. There is
no reference number listed for records sourced from the burial registers nor
from "The Pioneer Register" project.
The births are listed firstly in alphabetical order on the name of the father,
secondly in chronological order on the date of his ship of arrival (or date of birth), thirdly in alphabetical order on the name of the mother and finally
in chronological order on his childrens' dates of birth for family groups.
The data was collected from three sources; church baptismal registers (see
the church codes listed below), births from deaths (BdD) and the "Pioneer
Register Project" (PR).
There were 121 parishes established in the colony by 1840 plus a further 59
parishes established after 1840 whose baptismal registers contained entries
related to births before 1841. These parishes represented the Church of England,
the Church of Rome, the Church of Scotland, Wesleyan-Methodist and
Jewish denominations.
The burial registers of the same parishes contain 1,831 entries of infants
whose baptisms have not been found, either because they died too young before
they could be baptized or no baptism ever took place. In a few instances they may even have been born before arrival in the colony (indicated by a %).The "Pioneer Register Project" supplied a further 1,009 entries. Descendants
were apparently able to identify births from other family records of infants
who do not appear to have been baptized. It is strange that in many cases
they have siblings who were baptized, perhaps these baptismal records have
been lost (although for the integrity of this opus it is hoped that there
aren't any of these missing registers).
In 73 cases the age of the child was not recorded. It was common practice at
the time to record the age at death in the burial register all children who
died aged less than ten years old merely as an "infant'. Fortunately cross
checking with baptismal records has enabled all but 94 cases for the
age to be determined.
There were 679 baptisms involving children (and some adults) who were born before 1831, plus a further 56 who were recorded simply as "adults' with no date
of birth recorded (interestingly all of these were in Catholic parishes). The oldest person baptized was Uriah Moses who was born in 1778.1,677 of the baptisms occurred post 1840.
There were 848 instances where only the name of the mother was recorded and
a further 26 instances where neither the name of the father nor the mother
was recorded and finally there were two instances where neither the name of
the father nor of the mother nor of the child was recorded (a genealogical "dead end" if ever there as one) ! These 875 entries can be found in the "No
Surname" file.
The State Archives Records have 203 baptisms recorded which have no
corresponding entry in the designated parish. These are most likely
typographical errors referring to either earlier or later baptisms or to children born overseas but baptized in the colony.
There are 474 duplicate entries on the list and Richard Brotherton,
Anne Cullen, John Fleming, William Griffiths, James Hamilton, Thomas Pearson, Margaret Taylor, George Tom & Mary Ann Westgarth all managed to have their baptism recorded three times! These have been preserved on the list in order
to be able to locate the relevant baptism on the duplicated church register.
Many duplicates tend to arise when the State Archive records do not accord
with the parish registers. Also because the large Sydney metropolitan parishes
of St Phillips, St Johns, St James have not yet been transcribed, cross
checking has not been possible. Again duplicates occur in the same parish
due to obvious typographical errors in the State Archive records. Some duplicates may have occurred for parishes of the same denomination
because the minister may have been responsible for several parishes at the same time and confused the registers. The schism which took place between the Presbyterian parishes of St Stephens and St Andrews in Sydney for some reason has resulted in a large number of duplicates between the two.
Mixed marriages obviously account for the Anglican/Catholic duplicates
and probably for the same reason, but to a lesser extend, for the
Anglican/Presbyterian duplicates. It is also interesting to note in the
Hawkesbury Valley region the emergence of Anglican/Wesleyan duplicates as the
dissenting persuasion took hold. It was very surprising the note one
Catholic/Jewish duplicate.

Whilst the denomination percentages remained basically similar to the previous decade, the dissenting protestant sects; Wesleyan-Methodists, Baptists, Congregationalists were beginning to make their mark on the religious landscape of the colony.
