BAPTISMS - HEBREW TEMPLES

This list records 11 Hewbrew temples all established after 1830,
which  recorded  'baptisms' for children born  between  1831  and 1840.  When
combined  these  temples  totalled  200  'baptisms', although  two  refer  to
children  born  before  1831, and 11 were performed after 1840. Sadly, to date
the 'baptismal' registers of all,  except  for  two  (Penrith  Israelite  Temple
&  Liverpool Israelite Temple) are yet to be transcribed. In their absence  an
alternative  source of information is the State  Archive  Pioneer Series of
births.

The temples listed are as follows, arranged by date of establishment:

   13 Mar 1835: Penrith Israelite Temple {PENI}
      Jan 1845: Liverpool Israelite Temple {LIVI}

          1832: New South Wales Israelite Temple {NSWI}
          1832: Sydney Hebrew Temple {SYDH}
          1834: Maitland Hebrew Temple {MAIT}
          1835: Port Macquarie Hebrew Temple {PORT}
          1836: Illawarra Hebrew Temple {ILLH}
          1836: Windsor Hebrew Temple {WIND}
          1836: Parramatta Hebrew Temple {PARR}
          1837: Singleton Hebrew Temple {SING}
          1837: Bungonia; Goulburn  Hebrew Temple {BG-H}

For  the  two temples whose registers have been  transcribed  the information
recorded is as follows:

          date of baptism
          date of birth
          child's Christian name(s)
          father's family name
          father's Christian name(s)
          father's year & ship of arrival in the colony
          father's status upon arrival in the colony
          mother's maiden name (for illegitimate births only)
          mother's Christian name(s)
          mother's year & ship of arrival in the colony
          mother's status upon arrival in the colony
          parents' civil status at the time of the child's birth
          parents' marital status at the time of the child's birth
          parents' year & country/church of marriage where applicable
          abode
          fathers quality or profession
          reference number

The 'officiating minister' does not appear to have been recorded.

Father's year & ship of arrival in the colony, father's status upon arrival in the colony,
mother's year & ship of arrival in the colony, mother's status upon arrival in the colony,
parents' civil status at the time of the child's birth, parents' marital status
at  the time  of  the child's birth, parents' year & country/church  of marriage
where applicable are all value added details  resulting from  extensive personal
research, all information which makes this work so valuable for family historians.

In the temple register the mother's maiden name is only recorded when the  birth
is illegitimate, but again through personal research the maiden name of the
married women has been discovered as well.

The list is presented in temple order as per the list above then chronological
within each temple.

For  the  remaining nine temples regrettably  the  State  Archive records  contain
less information than the temple register, just seven items:

          year of birth
          child's Christian name(s)
          father's family name
          father's Christian name(s)
          mother's maiden name (for illegitimate births only)
          mother's Christian name(s)
          reference number

Unlike  the  Anglican  parishes, the reference  number  gives  no indication
as  to  the year of baptism.  However  following  the sequence of the reference
order numbers a reasonable estimate can be  made for all but eleven entries.

The list is presented in temple order as per the list above then by reference
number within each temple.

Assuming listing the mother's surname indicates she was not married to
the child's father, none of the births appear to be illegitimate.

Baptisms  relating to births prior to 1831 are indicated  with  a hash  sign
(#), duplicate baptisms are indicated with an  asterix (*) and baptisms for
children born at sea with a percent sign (%).

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry in the
original source document.

Entries  on  this list have one of the reference  identifiers  as listed  above.
To  locate  an entry on  this  list;  firstly  an alphabetical  search  on the
name would be made on Lists 1  or  2 from  which  the date of 'baptism' (or reference
number)  would  be retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate temple  &  date
(or reference number), the 'baptism' would be located on this list and finally
an alphabetical search on the name would be made on  the baptismal  date if there
should be more than one entry  for  that date.
