BAPTISMS - HOLY TRINITY KELSO
There were 463 baptisms performed at Holy Trinity Bathurst during the decade,
although 15 refer to children born before 1831, plus 47 performed after 1840
for children born between the years 1831 and 1840. On average there was roughly
one baptism performed each week over the decade.
The information recorded for each baptism includes:

Father's year & ship of arrival in the colony, father's status upon arrival in the colony,
mother's year & ship of arrival in the colony, mother's status upon arrival in the colony,
parents' civil status at the time of the child's birth, parents' marital status
at the time of the child's birth, parents' year & country/church of marriage
where applicable are all value added details resulting from extensive personal
research, all information which makes this work so valuable for family historians.
In the church register the mother's maiden name is only recorded when the birth
is illegitimate, but again through personal research the maiden name of many of the
married women has been discovered as well. However to the delight of family historians
everwhere Rev.Keane routinely recorded the family name of all mothers (at least until
October 1832 - why did he stop?) and what is more he indicated those who were married
by recording the notation "his wife" under her name.
The list is presented in chronological order by date of baptism then by reference
number. The records in the register are not always in strict chronological order
but this has been corrected in this work.
The Rev. John Espy Keane continued as incumbent from the previous decade
until November 1837 when Rev.Joseph Kidd Walpole took over until the end of 1839.
He was replaced by Rev.Charles Woodward who remaind until the end of the decade.
Occasional baptisms were performed during the decade by the Reverends: James Gunther,
Thomas Hassall, William Lisle, Thomas Sharpe, Richard Taylor. Bishop William Grant Broughton
even officiated at a baptism in 1834. The Rev Walpole christened his own daughter
in 1838.
With regard to the fathers 86% have been identified.
Fifthy three were colonial born plus 24 were childhood arrivals, combined making up
15% of the total; 227 were convicts or former convicts (44%); 49 from the military (10%)
and 85 arrived free in the colony (17%). There was one aboriginal father.
With regard to the mothers 85% have been identified.
One hundred and twenty three were colonial born plus 53 were childhood arrivals,
combined making up 34% of the total; 147 were convicts or former convicts (29%) and
110 arrived free in the colony (22%). There was one aboriginal mother.
Assuming listing the mother's surname indicates she was not married to
the child's father, seventy five (15%) of the births were illegitimate.
There were two baptisms in the State Archives Pioneer Series file which
have no entry on this parish register. It is very likely that both result from
typographical errors and relate to post 1840 birhts. These are identified with the
percent sign (%).
The reference number would direct the reader to the relevant entry in the
original source document. The numbering system continued from the previous
decade at 0357 and run to 0795 by the end of the decade. Number 0500 appears to be
duplicate of 0370.
Baptisms relating to births prior to 1831 are indicated with a hash sign
(#), duplicate baptisms are indicated with an asterix (*) and baptisms for
children born at sea with a percent sign (%).
Entries on this list have the reference identifier "HTK" on Lists 1 & 2. To
locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical search on the name would
be made on Lists 1 or 2 from which the reference number would be retrieved,
secondly using the appropriate number, the entry would be located.
