BURIALS - ANGLICAN OTHER PARISHES

This list records 21 Anglican churches and parishes all of  which were
established during the decade 1831 to 1840 and all of  which recorded less
than fifty burials in their registers. However when combined these churches
and parishes totalled 224 burials.

establishment:

The information recorded for each burial is as follows:
               burial date
               death date (after 1838)
               Christian name
               family name
               age
               abode
civil status at time of death
               year and ship of arrival
               quality or profession
               officiating minister
               reference number

The  burials within  each  church and  parish  are  listed  in chronological
order.

Various miscellaneous remarks in the register have been  recorded as
'end-notes' at the bottom of each church or parish.

At the beginning of this decade the information to be recorded  on the
official  government  supplied forms for  each  burial  was; reference number,
date of burial, Christian name of the deceased, family name of the deceased,
age, abode, ship of arrival, quality or  profession  and officiating
minister.

Regrettably in 1839 the 'Ship of Arrival' column was removed  from the
official  forms  altogether but it  was  still  occasionally recorded  by
nothing like as often as previously. The  year  and ship  of arrival have
been heavily researched outside the  parish register.

The  'Ship of Arrival' column was replaced by a 'Date  of  Death' column,
making identification much more difficult.

For  the colonial born their year of birth and parents names  are recorded
in the 'Ship of Arrival' column.

The ages at death ranged from one day for James Price and Jane Wilcox to 67
years for Cornelius Sheehan. The number of infants who  did not live past
their fifth birthday was 73 or 31% of all  burials. The ages of six adults
were not recorded.

All  the officiating ministers are listed at the end of  the  web page,
of whom there are twenty three in addition to three  other lay persons who
officiated in the place of a clergyman.

The  entry for Georgiana Black is duplicated from  Christ  Church Castlereagh
to the Parish of Penrith but as Rev.Fulton management of  both  parishes
at the time he may  have  confused  where  he performed the burial.

In  1838  at  St Johns Brisbane an unusual entry  occurs  of  the burial
of a 'non-burial'. Apparently Daniel Sweeney died but 'the body was not
found' with no other explanatory details provided! A second instance of
a burial without a body occurred in the parish of Ashfield in 1840 when
the burial of the infant Ellen Jones  is recorded even though she was
interned at sea.

In four of the parishes the incumbent had the melancholy duty  to bury  his
own child; Rev.Cowper at Stroud buried  his  daughter, Rev.Handt  at Moreton
Bay buried his son, Rev.Makinson at  Mulgoa buried his daughter and
Rev.Middleton at Raymond Terrace  buried his son.

There were six burials in the State Archives Pioneer Series  file which
have no entry on this parish register. It is  very  likely that most of
these result from typographical errors and relate to post 1840 burials.

The  reference  number would direct the reader  to  the  relevant entry
in the original source document.

To  locate an entry on this list; firstly an alphabetical  search on the
name would be made on List 5 using the parish code  listed in  the  table
above  from which the date  of  burial  would  be retrieved, secondly using
the appropriate date, the burial  would then be located on this list.
