BAPTISMS - CATHOLIC OTHER CHURCHES

This list records 24 Catholic churches and parishes stablished after 1830
(one parish was established in 1838 and all the rest in 1840 or beyond), all
of which recorded less than one hundred baptisms for children born between
the years 1831 and 1840, in fact even when combined these churches and parishes
only totalled 146 baptismns, with 100 occuring post 1840. Sadly, to date the
baptismal registers of all are yet to be transcribed. In their absence an
alternative source of information is the State Archive Pioneer Series of births.

The churches and parishes listed are as follows, arranged by date of
establishment:

            1838: Catholic Parish of Newcastle; Raymond Terrace {N-RT}
            1840: St Johns Campbelltown {SJCR}
            1840: Catholic Parish of Yass {YASS}
            1840: All Saints Liverpool {ALS}
            1840: Catholic Parish of Penrith {PENR}
            1840: Catholic Parish of Goulburn {GOUL}
            1840: Catholic Parish of Berrima; Sutton Forest {BERR}
            1841: Catholic Parish of Hartley {HART}
            1841: Catholic Parish of Brisbane Water {BRWR}
            1841: Catholic Parish of County Cook {COOK}
            1841: St Bedes Appin {SBA}
            1842: Catholic Parish of Cooma; Monaro/Manaroo District; Queabeyan; Twofold Bay {COOM}
            1843: Catholic Parish of Moreton Bay {MBR}
            1843: St Augustines Singleton (Co. Northumberland) {SASR}
            1843: Catholic Parish of Port Macquarie and New England {PORT}
            1846: St Josephs Macdonald River (Co. Hunter) {SJMC}
            1848: Catholic Parish of Araluen; Braidwood {ARAL}
            1848: Catholic Parish of Whittingham {WHIT}
            1849: Catholic Parish of Far South Coast (Co. Dampier) {FSC}
            1840: Catholic Parish of Kiama {KIAM}
            1850: Catholic Parish of Eldon {ELDO}
            1850: Catholic Parish of Wellington {WELL}
            1851: Catholic Parish of Carcoar; Cowra; Erroll; Orange {CARC}
            1851: Catholic Parish of Albury (Co. Goulburn) {ALBU}

Regrettably the  State Archive records contain  less  information than the church
register, just seven items:

          year of birth
          child's Christian name(s)
          father's family name
          father's Christian name(s)
          mother's maiden name (for illegitimate births only)
          mother's Christian name(s)
          reference number

Unlike the Anglican parishes, the reference volume number gives no indication as to
the year of baptism, however following the sequence of the reference order numbers a
reasonable estimate can be made.

Thus  information  missing  from the  parish  baptismal  register includes five
extra items of information:

          date of baptism
          date of birth
          abode
          fathers quality or profession
          officiating minister

Also  missing from these parishes, without further and  extensive personal
research, are the final seven extra items of information which  this work
normally endeavours to include and  which  makes this work so valuable:

          father's year & ship of arrival in the colony
          father's status upon arrival in the colony
          mother's year & ship of arrival in the colony
          mother's status upon arrival in the colony
          parents' civil status at the time of the child's birth
          parents' marital status at the time of the child's birth
          parents' year & country/church of marriage where applicable

The list is presented in church order as per the list above  then chronological
within each church.

Assuming listing  the  mother's surname  indicates  she  was  not married  to
the  child's  father, it appears that none of  the  births  were illegitimate.

Baptisms  relating to births prior to 1831 are indicated  with  a hash  sign
(#), duplicate baptisms are indicated with an  asterix (*) and baptisms for
children born at sea with a percent sign (%).

The  reference  number would direct the reader to the relevant entry in the
original source document.

Entries  on  this list have one of the reference  identifiers  as listed  above.
To  locate  an entry on  this  list;  firstly  an alphabetical  search  on the
name would be made on Lists 1  or  2 from  which  the date of baptism (or reference
number)  would  be retrieved,  secondly  using  the appropriate church  &  date
(or reference number), the baptism would be located on this list and finally
an alphabetical search on the name would be made on  the baptismal  date if there
should be more than one entry  for  that date.
