Female Irish Convicts
Guilty of Planned Arson
Ladies such as Ellen, Jane, Margaret and Celia – and many others were among the women, young and old, who were transported to Van Diemen’s Land from Ireland for planning to commit crimes that would ensure they were transported. These women were among those who chose to set fires deliberately.
Why was it their intention to be transported across the seas to an unknown land? To find the answer, we have to go back into Irish history and find out what was happening in the country. The stark answer is soon evident. Extreme distress, poverty, illness and death throughout Ireland as a result of the Great Irish Famine which is generally accepted as lasting from 1846 to 1851.
