Finding the family farm: Using land records and maps for Queensland pastoral properties

May 4 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM AEST

Keen to know when your family first settled in an area? When they acquired the property? Who held it before them? Land records can answer these questions and much more. This talk focuses on the rural parts of Queensland where most properties were held as leased Crown land rather than by freehold sale. Learn how to use historic maps to locate a property, to identify the right land files, and to locate those files at the Queensland State Archives. Find out how to interpret the contents of the files when you see them. Discover the difference between a pastoral run and a grazing farm, and between a resumption and a selection. Learn where to find the ‘rules’ that governed who got what land and under what conditions. This talk will help you access a source rich in historic documentation for a place, a family, and a community.

Presenter:
Charlotte Sale

It all began when Charlotte offered to help her mother update the Australian branch of the family tree back in the 1990s. The family history bug bit deeply and she’s now researched her family’s lives in more than ten different countries. At present Charlotte is researching her grandfather’s life in western Queensland, discovering a web of land ownership by family and connections from the 1870s to the 1950s. Charlotte is a regular presenter at GSQ, QFHS and elsewhere. She has an extensive professional background in organisational change, research, and communication. More importantly, she is the holder of family stories for her family, near and far, and regularly swaps granny snaps with her first, second and third cousins in Australia, the UK, Italy, Spain and South Africa.
