Hail! Stranger, hail! Right welcome to our shore
September 6 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM AEST
Populating North-Eastern New South Wales 1842 – 1860
“Frederick” wrote this poem in February 1849 to welcome the Reverend John Lang’s Fortitude immigrants to our district, “queen of southern seas”. To gain these glories still involved months on fragile vessels sailing the hazardous Great Circle route.
In this review for GSQ, two historian members will take a detailed look at government encouragement to entice settlers to stream into the north-eastern districts within the confines of colonial New South Wales. Between 1842 and 1860 these travellers were a cosmopolitan grouping from several European countries – all looking to leave behind difficult economic or social conditions. Jennifer Harrison will describe the illusory schedule. Would these masses find prosperity on the other side of the world “to render justice to the glowing tale”? In the second half of the of the presentation, Dot Wickham will investigate attributes of the intrepid 240 passengers who ventured to start new lives boarding the very first immigrant ship to arrive in Moreton Bay, the Artemisia in December 1848. During these two decades, the incomers contributed to a new world, far from family, friends and familiar sites.
