Hardscrabble lives: Stealing Arms and Illegal Oaths- Transportation of Irish Protestors, 1821-1824

November 30 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM AEST

During the early 1820s conditions were dire, particularly in the southern Irish counties of Tipperary, Cork, Clare, Limerick, Kilkenny, Kerry and Waterford. Amidst severe famine and intense economic depression, chronic unemployment, evictions, sectarian and millenarian upsurge and agrarian unrest, extraordinary violence became notorious.  During several research visits to Ireland, the Rockite ‘wars’, the Special Sessions of 1822-4, the introduction of the Surprize hulk at Queenstown, Cork and the Essex at Kingstown, Dublin, culminating in the transportation of hundreds of protesters to the Australian colonies, became a project which captivated this researcher.  Not all Irish convict ancestors were transported for petty crimes – let’s look at why some were considered ‘political’ prisoners.

Presenter:
Dr Jennifer Harrison

Dr Jennifer Harrison is a research adviser with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland.  Her experience over a generation as Queensland Researcher for the Australian Dictionary of Biography at the Australian National University reinforced her fascination for the people element within family and local history.  She has written the Australian Notebook column for Irish Roots since its inception in 1992 and lectured and published widely on Irish-Australian immigrants – convicts and settlers. While Jennifer currently is caught up in marking the two hundredth anniversary of establishment of the penal colony at Moreton Bay and the genesis of Brisbane Town, she continues to enjoy her role as patron of the Genealogical Society of Queensland.
