Researching lives of Queenslanders in the 1800s
March 1 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM AEST
The Harry Gentle Resource Centre and Biographical Dictionary.
Griffith University’s Harry Gentle Resource Centre (HGRC) has recently launched a Dictionary of Biography concentrating on First Peoples, soldiers, convicts and early settlers of Queensland. However, the HGRC is much more than a Dictionary of Biography to which members of the public are invited to submit entries. The centre also provides visiting fellowships to academic, professional and local historians to undertake projects on colonial Queensland and Queenslanders which are published on the HGRC website. Harry Gentle’s wish was to create a centre focused on people, groups and organisations that are not usually the subject of academic study and dictionaries of biography: First Nations people and communities; convicts and free-born; sailors and settlers; faith leaders and the military – the ‘ordinary’ people of the area that became known as Queensland in 1859.
Queensland historian Jan Richardson specialises in the pre-Separation history of Moreton Bay, focusing on biographical and genealogical research of early residents. A Visiting Fellow with Griffith University’s Harry Gentle Resource Centre in 2020-2021, she created a database of female convicts and ex-convicts, along with their husbands, partners and children, who were some of Queensland’s first settlers following the closure of the Moreton Bay penal settlement in 1839. Jan is currently a PhD candidate at Griffith University researching the lives of non-Indigenous ethnic minorities, including Mauritian convicts and Chinese indentured labourers, who arrived in Queensland during the pre-Separation period.
