Women Teachers in Early Brisbane

September 21 @ 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM AEST

Rather than marry well and settle down to home and family life, some of Brisbane’s earliest women teachers chose a different life. Highly educated, many of them were also accomplished musicians, singers and dancers. Teaching and running their schools and academies gave them independence and respect. Some were widows and others spinsters. From clues among memoirs, programs, and newspapers, using family history research, we will discover the stories of three remarkable women who, through unexpected circumstances, chose a different path.

Presenter:
Sharyn Merkley

Sharyn Merkley has researched her family history for over thirty years. In 2017, as a result of her passion for social and family history, she published “Brisbane Burns: How the great fires of 1864 shaped a city and its people. She has contributed articles to the Genealogical Society of Queensland’s blog, and magazine, Generation. After careers in computer programming and primary education, Sharyn has also completed a Diploma in Family History.
