Sydney’s Prison Hulk – The HMS Phoenix 1825 – 1837

……. and the convicted felons of Colonial NSW

The HMS Phoenix was built on the river Thames in 1798. She brought convicts to Van Diemen’s Land in July 1824 and then proceeded to sail up the east coast to Sydney. The keel was damaged beyond repair and the Colonial Government purchased the damaged vessel for £1000 after many of the fittings had been removed and sold. As an unseaworthy hulk, the Phoenix was suitable for use as a prison ship in Sydney Harbour to alleviate the overcrowded condition of Sydney Gaol.

The book contains information about the Phoenix as well as from four SRNSW microfilms 819, 820, 821 & 822.

Includes names of prisoners on the hulk.
