Southern Suburbs Branch of the Genealogical Society of Queensland (the Society) was formed to foster and promote the study, practice and preservation of of genealogy, family history and related subjects; to foster a spirit of friendliness and co-operation; and to give assistance to members through mutual sharing of information and techniques.
The inaugural meeting of the Branch was held in 1980, at the home of the first President, Margaret Belcher. The library consisted of one book. As membership grew, subsequent meetings were held at Coorparoo Primary School and Cavendish Road State High School until April 1996, when the Branch moved to its present location at the Scouts Den at Upper Mt. Gravatt.
The membership of the Branch consists of ordinary and associate members (at an annual fee of $25.00). Ordinary members have full membership of the Society, while associate members of Southern Suburbs do not have free access to the library or facilities of GSQ or receive a copy of the GSQ journal Generation. Branch associate members have full voting rights at all meetings of the Branch and have full access to the Branch library.
Branch meetings are held in the Upper Mt. Gravatt Scout Den, down Carson Lane, off Logan Road, Upper Mt.Gravatt (between the Progress Hall and the Upper Mt. Gravatt State School). Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, except December. The library opens at 7.00pm, with the meeting commencing at 7.30pm and the guest speaker presentation at 8.00pm.
The Branch's library resources are held at its location at the Upper Mt. Gravatt Scout Den. The library is open on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month (with the exception of December and public holidays), from 9.30am to 2.00pm.
