Wednesday night @ GSQ: Miegunyah – a house full of histories

August 28 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

On the verandah at Miegunyah, a residence in Brisbane, 1886, SLQ

Bob McAllister will revisit his presentation to the June Symposium in an extended version of Miegunyah: A house full of histories.

We are accustomed to researching family history that extends across several generations who may have lived in multiple (often widely-scattered) locations. During its “life”, a single historic home may have sheltered members of several families with no direct genealogical links.

Although Miegunyah at Bowen Hills (since 1967 a museum operated by Queensland Women’s Historical Association) had just five owners and three long-term resident families in the preceding 80 years, the stories of those families and those of their relatives, associates and neighbours provide a novel context through which to view a broad sweep of Queensland history.

Presenter: Bob McAllister

The schoolboy who was sure he would become an historian (or possibly a real archaeologist) was diverted into science, then teaching and curriculum development. In retirement, he developed a passion for family history and the realisation that the story of our ancestors must be more than names, dates, and pedigrees. The circle is closing.
